Use solar energy, recycled water to turn Mumbai into eco-city: Greens

Navi Mumbai: If the citizens are willing to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives, Navi Mumbai can be transformed into an eco-city and emission of carbon footprints can be reduced too, said civic chief Tukaram Mundhe. He was speaking at the panel discussion, organized by NMMC and The Energy and Resources Institute (Teri), as part of the Eco City Project on Friday at the civic headquarters in Belapur."For Navi Mumbai to become eco-city, residents must use water judiciously. Waste segregation should be taken up seriously," said Mundhe.

"Eco city means replenishing more than you can consume. In Navi Mumbai, which is blessed with nature, we should try and preserve more. The residents need to make an effort to start walking at least a mile a day to reduce carbon footprints," said environmentalist Sandeep Bangia.

Last Mile connectivity through solar power operated vehicles, generating electricity using discarded coconut shells were some of the topics discussed."Around 40 tonnes of coconut shells are discarded daily at the landfill site. These can be used for generating electricity," said associate director of Teri, Dr Anjali Parasnis. The forum had ex-Cidco MD and senior advisor of Teri, G S Gill, among other guests, and secretary general of Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Claudio Maffiolletti.
