Renewables, storage projects can bid in 456-MW RfP by Public Service Company of New Mexico

US utility Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), part of energy holding PNM Resources (NYSE:PNM), is seeking proposals for 456 MW of power generation capacity with a preference on renewable energy and battery storage options.

The Request for Proposals (RfP), unveiled last week, is part of PNM’s 2017-2036 integrated resource plan and aims to fulfill its expected power requirements following the potential closure of the San Juan coal-fired station in 2022. The electric utility has agreed with the state of New Mexico and the Environmental Protection Agency to retire units 2 and 3 at the complex before the end of the year in order to meet a federal mandate.

The competitive solicitation is open to proposals for a combination of resources that can satisfy system reliability needs and will be conducted through the PowerAdvocate platform. Proposals will be accepted by January 30.

PNM will hold a pre-bid conference at its headquarters in Albuquerque on November 14.

According to its website, PNM operates coal-fired, nuclear, natural gas and renewable power plants, including wind, solar and geothermal. At present, about 56.1% of the power it provides comes from coal, while the share of wind and solar power stands at 7.1% and 2.6%, respectively.
