Rajkot takes leap towards becoming a Smart City

Saurashtra's commercial capital, Rajkot, took an important step towards becoming a 'Smart City' on Thursday when the Rajkot Municipal Corporation inked three memorandum of understandings (MoUs) with international agencies for implementing various projects for sustainable development by reducing carbon footprint, building climate change resilience and scientific disposal of solid waste.

The first MoU was signed as a part of 'capacity building project on low carbon and climate resilience city development in India' with SDC. ICLEI will be the implementing agency for this project which will work in the water supply and transport sector of the city. Entire funding for this project will be done by SDC.The second project on Integrated Resource Management In Asian Cities - The Urban Nexus financed by the German Federal Ministries of Economic Cooperation and Development will be jointly implemented by German firm GIZ and ICLEI, a spokesman for the RMC said. They will work on water, waste water and solid waste management projects. The third MoU was signed for Building Efficiency Accelerators project for Sustainable Energy For All, which is supported by World Resource Institute (WRI). ICLEI will implement this project which is aimed at making energy-efficient buildings."Rajkot is fast developing as an important urban centre and working towards becoming a Smart City.
