Kerala govt to review viability of waste-to-energy plant

The LDF government will review the Rs 295-crore waste-to-energy management plant proposed at Brahmapuram.Talking to TOI, minister for local administration K T Jaleel said that there were many points to be clarified in the project for which the Kochi corporation had already signed a contract with private firm G J Nature Care and Energy Ltd.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had reservations about the project as it is 'uneconomical'. Also, the LDF government's policy is to encourage decentralized waste management programmes. Finance minister Thomas Isaac has proved that decentralized waste management system is successful by implementing the same in Alappuzha," said a source from the local self-government department (LSGD).

In fact, Suchitwa Mission authorities had also objected the project citing non-viability and non-proven waste treatment method. "Gasification is suitable for dry waste and biomass, whereas nearly 70% of the municipal solid waste (MSW) will be wet," said a corporation official."No official communication has been received from the state government that the project will be reviewed. The plot the civic body had earmarked for the waste-to-energy plant is not suitable for the project. So another plot will be allotted to them at the earliest," said the official.
