Energy plant Corporation exudes optimism

Even though the minister for local administration K T Jaleel made it clear that the Rs 295-crore waste-to-energy project to come up at Brahmapuram will be reviewed, the Kochi corporation authorities are hopeful of implementing it.Talking to TOI, Kochi corporation secretary Amit Meena said that the civic body is yet to receive any communication from the minister's office or local self-government department (LSGD) regarding the review. "If we receive any communication, we will try to explain the project and try to clear doubts," the secretary said.

TOI had carried a report on Friday after Jaleel said that the government will review the project. The minister said that the technology to be used in the waste-to-energy project is gasification, a method that has never been tested and proven successful in our country.At the same time, ruling front councillors said that the doubts raised by the Suchitwa Mission and Kerala State Electricity Board regarding the technology to be used for waste treatment and energy generation and viability ofAs per the new rules, the Centre should fix tariff or charges for the power generated from the waste-to-energy plants based on solid waste and ensure compulsory purchase of power generated. It also states that the ministry of new and renewable energy sources shall facilitate infrastructure creation for waste-to-energy plants and provide appropriate subsidy or incentives.
