Delhi government asks Anil Ambani to address power outages

Delhi power minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday threatened to take strong action against two units of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd that supply power to 3.5 million consumers in Delhi for what it called an ‘unprecedented power outage’ in the city.In a letter addressed to Reliance ADA Group chairman Anil Dhirubhai Ambani at his Mumbai office, Jain blamed the managers and engineers of the companies—BSES Yamuna Power Ltd and BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd—for the power outages in the capital and requested Ambani to meet him early next week with a concrete roadmap to improve the situation.

“You might have had a cosy relationship with previous governments in Delhi at the expense of public interest. Kindly note that the new government is fully committed to protecting the interests of public and their welfare. In order to do that, the new AAP government in Delhi will not hesitate in taking strong actions,” said the letter, reviewed by Mint.An email sent to BSES in the evening was not immediately answered. A person privy to the discussions between the companies and the Delhi government said the letter threatening strong action did not go to either of the BSES units. On 20 May, Delhi’s peak power demand, touched 6,188 megawatt, the highest ever in the city, showing an increase of over 23% from the peak power demand recorded in the third week of May last year, the person said.
