Court sentences Rathi Steel’s top officials to three years jail

A Delhi court on Wednesday sentenced Rathi Steel Pvt. Ltd’s (RSPL) top officials—managing director Pradeep Rathi and chief executive officer Udit Rathi—to three years’ imprisonment in a coal block allocation case.On Tuesday, the special court, hearing cases arising out of coal block allocations deemed irregular, convicted the two, along with additional general manager Kushal Aggarwal, on counts of criminal conspiracy and cheating.

The case arose from the allocation of the Kesla North coal block in Chhattisgarh to RSPL, deemed irregular by the Central Bureau of Investigation.Aggarwal was sentenced to two years in prison.Special judge Bharat Parashar also slapped a fine of Rs.50 lakh on Udit Rathi, Rs.25 lakh on Pradeep Rathi and Rs.5 lakh on Aggarwal. RSPL has been directed to pay Rs.50 lakh.The lawyers for the Rathis told the court on Tuesday that they would challenge the conviction and sentencing orders in the Delhi high court.
